A few years ago, being a vegan in Sri Lanka meant eating a lot of plain rice and explaining what "no cheese" meant. In 2025, Ahangama is arguably one of the most plant-based friendly towns in Asia.

The beauty of Sri Lankan cuisine is that it is naturally vegan-heavy. Coconut milk is used instead of dairy cream, and oil is used instead of butter. But beyond the local curry, a wave of modern cafes has brought sourdough, falafel, and cashew-cheese cakes to the jungle. Whether you are a strict vegan or just trying to eat cleaner after a week of beer and roti, here are the best spots to eat green in Ahangama.

The Kip (Slow Living & Brunch)

If you want a meal that feels like a hug, go to The Kip. Hidden in a renovated colonial villa, they follow a "slow food" philosophy.

  • The Vibe: Bohemian luxury. You eat at communal wooden tables in a jungle garden.
  • The Menu: It is almost entirely vegetarian/vegan. Their Sourdough Toasts are legendary, topped with hummus, mushrooms, or avocado.
  • Must Try: The "Coco-Whip" bowls (vegan ice cream made from coconut) are the perfect post-surf cool down.

Veda Cafe (The All-You-Can-Eat Buffet)

Located near the Kabalana beach area, Veda Cafe is a hero for hungry surfers on a budget.

  • The Concept: A daily "Rice and Curry" buffet that is heavily vegetarian.
  • The Food: You get a plate of red rice and can load up on Dhal (lentils), Pumpkin curry, and fresh salads.
  • The Price: It is incredibly affordable (approx. 1,200 LKR).
  • Vegan Tip: Most of their vegetable curries are vegan by default, but always ask if they used "Ghee" (clarified butter) in the rice, though they usually use oil.

Cactus (Smoothie Bowls & Sweets)

You have probably seen this place on Instagram. It’s the pink cafe right on the oceanfront.

  • The Vibe: Trendy, bright, and breezy.
  • The Menu: They specialize in Smoothie Bowls. The "Cacao & Peanut Butter" bowl is rich, creamy, and dairy-free.
  • The Bakery: They often have a selection of Raw Vegan Cakes (like passionfruit cheesecake) in the display cabinet.
  • Must Try: Their Iced Lattes made with homemade Coconut Milk.

East Falafel ( The Savory Hit)

Sometimes you just need comfort food. East Falafel brings authentic Middle Eastern flavors to the south coast.

  • The Food: Crispy, hot falafels wrapped in soft pita bread with hummus and tahini.
  • Why it works: Falafel is naturally vegan. Just make sure to ask for the Tahini sauce (sesame paste) instead of any yogurt-based sauces.
  • The Portion: It is huge. One wrap will keep you full for hours.

Manori’s Kitchen (Authentic & Home Cooked)

For the most authentic vegan meal, you go to a local home. Manori’s Kitchen is exactly that a restaurant in a family garden.

  • The Dish: A set menu of Vegetable Rice and Curry.
  • The Variety: You will get 4-5 different vegetable dishes. Look out for "Polos" (Jackfruit Curry). When cooked slowly, young jackfruit has the texture of pulled pork, but it is 100% vegan.
  • The Warning: Be careful of "Maldive Fish" (Umbalakada). It is a dried fish crumble used as a seasoning in many Sri Lankan dishes (especially Coconut Sambol).
  • The Phrase: Tell Manori: "Maldive Fish epa" (No Maldive fish). She understands and will serve you the pure veg version.

No Meat, No Problem

Ahangama is one of the easiest places in the world to be a vegetarian. You don't have to survive on side salads here. Between the jackfruit curries at Manori's and the sourdough at The Kip, you might even forget about meat entirely.
