An honest review of whether Cactus Cafe is worth the hype.

If you have looked at Instagram photos of Ahangama, you have seen Cactus. With its pastel pink walls, polished concrete floors, and impeccable ocean views, it looks like a slice of Tulum dropped onto the Sri Lankan coast. It is easily the most "viral" cafe in town.

But hype can be dangerous. Is it just a pretty face for influencers to take selfies, or is the food actually good? Does the WiFi work? Is it worth the "tourist price" tag? We went there (multiple times) to give you the honest, unfiltered verdict.

The Vibe: 10/10 Aesthetics

Let’s give credit where it’s due: this place is stunning.

  • The Design: It is open-air, breezy, and incredibly stylish. The owners have nailed the "desert chic" aesthetic. Every corner is photogenic.
  • The Atmosphere: It sits directly on the oceanfront. You can watch surfers riding waves while you wait for your coffee. It feels relaxed, premium, and clean.
  • The Crowd: Expect to see cool expats, digital nomads, and travelers wearing linen.

The Food: Is it Good?

Yes. In fact, it’s excellent. Often, "Instagram Cafes" serve average food. Cactus is the exception. The menu is fresh, modern, and caters perfectly to the "Healthy but Delicious" crowd.

  • The Star Dish: The Brioche French Toast. It is thick, fluffy, and comes buried in berry compote and mascarpone. It is arguably the best sweet breakfast in Ahangama.
  • The Savory Pick: The Smoked Salmon Toast or the Breakfast Burrito. Generous portions and high-quality ingredients.
  • The Drinks: Their Iced Latte with Coconut Milk is a staple. If you are there later in the day, the Aperol Spritz hits the spot.

Can You Work Here? (Digital Nomad Test)

Ahangama is a workspace hub, and Cactus is a major player.

  • The WiFi: Yes, they have it, and it is usually fast (fiber).
  • The Rule: It is not a coworking space, it is a restaurant. The unwritten rule is: Don't camp. If you are going to work for 3 hours, order breakfast and a second coffee.
  • The Best Time: Come between 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM. After 12:00 PM, the lunch rush starts, the music gets louder, and it becomes less "office" and more "social club." Bring noise-canceling headphones.

The Verdict: The Pros & Cons

The Good:

  • The food quality is consistent and high.
  • The view is unbeatable.
  • They have a cute boutique shop (Prickly Pear) inside if you need to buy a gift (or a bikini).

The "Bad":

  • It’s Pricey: You are paying for the view and the brand. A breakfast + coffee here will cost significantly more than a local spot (expect to pay $10–$15 USD per person).
  • The Service Charge: Like many high-end spots, there is a service charge added to the bill.
  • The Wait: On weekends, you might have to wait 15 minutes for a table.

Is Cactus worth the hype? Absolutely. It isn't the place you go for a cheap, quick roti. It is the place you go when you want to treat yourself, feel inspired, and eat a breakfast that tastes as good as it looks. Just go early to snag a table by the rail.
